What is the project all about?

About the project, Native Medicinal Plant Awareness for Children:

This is a multi-faceted project which will include 12 issues of Herbal Roots zine, a 2019 wall calendar and an at risk native medicinal herbals coloring book, all of which is being created over the course of the next year.

I am devoting a year of Herbal Roots zine to focusing on native medicinal species that are on the United Plant Savers’ “at risk” list. In addition to the existing sections of each issue, I will be adding in sections on the conservation and cultivation of those plants and how to help existing wild spaces to thrive.

This project will focus on teaching kids about the importance of conservation and the cultivation of 14 of our most endangered species of native medicinals through stories, songs, poems, games, puzzles, etc. The outcome of this project will be 14 individual issues, each issue devoted to a particular endangered or “at risk” native medicinal herb.

In the past I have been hesitant to write about plants that are endangered and at risk due to the over harvesting of such plants. I feel the time has come to address this concern directly, by teaching our next generation of herbalists the proper course of action when using native medicinals for medicine through responsible cultivation and stewardship.

About the instructor

I love teaching herbalism and botanical drawing and I'm excited to bring the two loves to the online teaching world. I am the creator, author, and illustrator of the popular online kid's ebook series, Herbal Roots zine, which teaches children about the medicinal uses of herbs through fun activities like games, puzzles, songs, stories, and recipes. I began this ebook back in 2009 when I was looking for resources to teach my youngest two children, which I was homeschooling, when I realized there wasn't much available for teaching kids about herbs.   I am a registered herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild and inaddition to writing the monthly ezine, I teach classes in my community as well as all over the United States to both adults and children. I have created and run kid camps at herbal conferences around the country as well and have run a kid's camps out of my home during the summer. I also see clients out of my home office.   Now that I'm not homeschooling my youngest two (which are now in 10th and 11th grade) I am usually drawing plants or walking my dog Lulu in the woods while taking photos of the plants that are growing there in my free time.   Teaching others about herbs is my focus with a passion on sharing my knowledge with children as they ARE our future!
